New Academy starlet Jack Bledowski (pictured with his dad Lee and Head Scot Jim Carlin) recently signed for Dundee United U13s Academy team. We are delighted that Jack has pledged his immediate future development with Dundee United and look forward to his progression within the Academy. Jack is a cultured left sided midfielder with good technical qualities and played with Arbroath Lads Club for the last five years. In fact, Jack came to our attention a number of years ago but he felt he wasn’t ready at that time to play at this level so we have monitored his development and he feels now that he can come and play against the best players in Scotland at his own age group.

Academy News – Week commencing 11 April

The Dundee United Academy Under-10s and and Under-11s on Monday last week set off to take part in a Football Festival in Oakham near Derby, a trip made possible through the support of both ArabTRUST and the Dundee United Development Association.

Academy Manager Brian Grant said: “This football festival is held each spring time and summer in a place called Oakham close to both Derby and Leicester and is invitational only to selected Academies throughout Britain and Europe.

“We travelled on the Monday and arrived safely in the early evening at Oakham Boarding school, after some dinner it was an early night for the boys with a busy day ahead. The standard was  very high and the boys had a tough start on the Tuesday with their first games v Leicester City and  Elite Soccer Academy. They acquitted themselves very well against older players and it was a very positive start to the festival for them.

“The day was rounded off by all the players and some parents going to watch Derby County play Hull at the Ipro stadium. The players thoroughly enjoyed the game and it was also great to see both Johnny Russell and Andy Robertson playing for their respective teams in an entertaining win for Derby. The great aspect of seeing that game was the journey that Johnny had taken was similar to theirs, in that they are at the start and he on the cusp possibly of playing in the EPL.

“Next morning the boys played Nottingham Forest and Chesterfield, again they were playing older players and they struggled to deal with the different playing style of both teams. After some lunch and a little pep talk both the U10s and U11s played extremely well in the two remaining fixtures versus Watford and Birmingham that afternoon and played entertaining football with positive outcomes. Wednesday night the players had a little downtime and enjoyed the fantastic facilities on site in Oakham and had a very entertaining table tennis competition and a recovery session in the pool.

“On Thursday morning the boys played Sunderland and Bradford respectively and they finished their time down there with probably the best performances of the week.

“It was a great experience for the boys and it is not just about the football but how they conducted themselves representing the Club. when you have little boys wearing the Dundee United tracksuit, they can get a lot of attention and they need to behave in a certain manner and like young professionals. They were a credit to the Club and were very well received at the festival and during the time that they travelled down.

“It was a fantastic experience for the group of players and without the help of the ArabTRUST, DUDA  and the parents it would not have been possible and we appreciate the help funding this trip.’

ArabTRUST Chairman Grant McKenzie said: “ArabTRUST are delighted to assist in the cost – we believe this will be a fantastic experience for the young players and assist in their ongoing development as footballers.”

Colin Stewart, Chairman of the Dundee United Development Association added: “We see trips like this as a very rewarding experience for our young stars of the future and we were very happy to make a financial contribution. Proceeds from the United Futures lottery and the 50/50 match day draw will continue to be used to support trips like this, and other youth development related projects.”

Academy News – Week commencing 22 June

Dundee United are delighted to announce that Graham Taylor (17), Jordan Hornby (17) and Logan Davie (16) have signed professional contracts with the Club.

The trio all step up from the Terrors’ Academy. Graham and Logan joined seven years ago and attended the St John’s School Project. Jordan joined for a second spell at Under 15 level.

Graham, originally part of the Stirling Coaching Centre, showed great commitment by leaving home every day at 6am to attend St John’s, most days not arriving home until 7pm. This commitment and attitude is mirrored on the park. Graham is an attacking midfielder who enjoys playing central but will also play in wider area when asked. The full time environment will allow Graham to improve his physicality through the strength and conditioning program all development squad players undergo. Dribbling at opponents and acceleration are his strong points.

Jordan returned to the United set up a more confident player and prefers either left back or left midfield. His main assets currently are his vision  and passing ability. He also possesses a terrific  strike. The full time environment will allow Jordan to improve his general understanding of the game and improve his positional sense. He will give greater balance to the Development Squad as he is a natural left sided player.

Logan is an athletic player who currently plays as a deep sitting midfielder and links the play from defence to attack. In recent fitness tests, Logan was the fittest in his age group and this is shown by his endeavour to work across the pitch to win possession back. Logan is comfortable all through the midfield positions and also at right back. The full time environment will see Logan improve upper body strength and increase his positional understanding.

All three will join the Development Squad under Steve Campbell and Dave Bowman’s guidance upon return to pre season.

Academy News – Week commencing 1 September

It was another busy week for the Club’s Academy with signings and international call-ups. Last Thursday night, the Club secured the services of Jamie McCann (left) and Callum Doran (right). Academy Manager Brian Grant said: “Jamie is a forward and prolific goal scorer who was coveted by a number of teams but we were delighted that he chose to sign with Dundee United and progress his development with our U12s group. He is from Dundee. Callum is from Kirkcaldy and plays in goal for our U13s age group. Again a number of elite academies were after his signature and we are very pleased that he chose Dundee United as his preferred option. We also signed another goalkeeper, Liam Findlay (no picture), who is from Forfar and will play with our U12s age group. Liam has shown up well in both training and in recent games and will be an excellent signing for our U12s.

Meanwhile, Kieran Freeman has been selected into the squad for two U15 (2000) international challenge matches against Switzerland at Forthbank Stadium, Stirling, the first on Tuesday, 9 September with a 7pm kick-off and the second game on Thursday, 11 September which is closed doors. Scott Allardice and Ali Coote had been called up too but Scott is unfortunately injured and Ali played with the Development Team on Tuesday night.

Academy News – Week commencing 18 August

The new season started for our 6 Academy teams (U11s,U12s,U13s,U14s,U15s and U17s) at the weekend with games v Motherwell in the Elite games programme. There are 12 Academy teams that play in this Elite programme each weekend which is based on certain criteria and Measurable Performance Outcomes ie Academy graduates in 1st team, international honours, Academy players that are playing 1st team football at a different Club but part of their development was with Dundee United Academy. There was some very good displays from a number of the age groups. Pictured below is the U12s squad and coaches Mike Smith and Nial Nicholson.

Dundee United Academy Under 12s 2014 15

It was the 1st time our U11s have played at this level and after shaky start they handled the intensity of playing in this environment and acquitted themselves well and will learn from their experience. Our U11s are pictured below with coaches Steven Beattie , Andrew Menlove,Mustafa- Al- Saffer and Kit Bremner..

Academy U11sOur U13s to U17s had mixed fortunes and some followed on from the 1st teams defensive display the day before and lost needless goals from set pieces but overall they recovered and played some good stuff and created lots of goal scoring opportunities. It has been big week for some of our U13s group who were selected to join the SFA Performance Programme based in St Johns HS in Dundee and Graeme HS in Falkirk. We have 13 players out of the squad that have enrolled in S1 at the above schools, who under the guidance of former United player Iain Jenkins and former Motherwell player Ian Ross will be having 5 extra coaching sessions per week during curriculum time. Our own programme which was also operated out of St Johns HS has ran its cycle and with the SFA running their programme at the same venue we thought it would be more econonmical to partner the governing body.Out of our own programme we had Ali Coote,Greig McNaughton, Scott Allardice and Ryan Booth all turn full- time professionals in the summer
