Scott’s Promising Debut

April 10, 2017

Substituted with 13 minutes to go on his debut, Scott Allardice left the field to a loud chorus of cheers that must have been music to the ears of the 19-year-old Dundonian.

Scott, who joined United from local rivals Dundee FC as a 12-year-old and attended St John’s High School performance programme under Steve Leahy, gave a composed and accomplished performance against the Bairns.

Afterwards, the Youth Academy graduate spoke to ArabZONE and said, “I have been on the fringes for a wee while hoping for an opportunity and today was the day that opportunity came. My hope is that I can now build on it for the rest of the season.”

Scott’s youth career suffered a double blow with two knee injuries, but he has shown great mental endurance to return from long spells of rehabilitation to drive his way into first-team thoughts.

“Today was the result of a lot of hard work and a lot of help from the staff, physios and the Doctor who all helped me return from my injury. It was a difficult time going to the gym each day not knowing if there was an outcome at the end of all the rehab but my family support has been vital. Now though I am focusing ahead on building on this and showing what I can bring to the team.” Scott said.

Manager Ray McKinnon was pleased with the debut but revealed he expected the youngster to perform as he did and talked up the fact that a few young terrors have now pushed into the first-team squad.

Ray said, “Scott is ready now. He showed the ability, presence and mental ability to step in today. I decided early in the week he deserved a start and although he tired he was excellent for us.

“He has been consistently good at Under 20 level this season and thoroughly deserved his International call-up recently at Under 19 level. The door is open for him now to continue developing. Jamie Robson was also excellent  against Falkirk, and he has not long turned 19-year-old. Ali Coote has improved and done well in recent weeks too. It is great to have these guys pushing, and the hope is that they continue to work hard and become important players for Dundee United.”
