Born in the Netherlands, Frank van der Struijk started his career in youth football with LSV Lennisheuvel before moving to Willem II, the club he would make his professional debut for. His first start for Willem II came in 2005 and he went on to establish himself as a regular in the side. It was during this time that Frank gained international recognition at U-21 level, representing his country at the 2007 UEFA European Championships.
Three years later, in 2008, he earned a move to another Dutch side, Vitesse Arnhem. In 2010 Frank returned to Willem II on loan but his second stay was brief and he was soon back at his parent club Vitesse where he remained until 2014. During that summer Frank moved back to Willem II in a permanent two year deal, after which he left the club following expiry of his contract. In August 2016, Frank made the move to Scotland, joining Dundee United on a free transfer.
