Born in Amsterdam, Nick van der Velden was a product of the Ajax youth system and played for their U19 squad before moving to amateur Amsterdam side DWS. A late starter, his first professional deal was with Eredivise side RKC Waalwijk in 2003 where he made his senior debut at age 22. After three seasons with RKC, he moved to Eerste Divisive side Dordrecht where he established himself as a winger and a goalscorer. His form earned him a move back to the top tier in 2008 when he signed for AZ Alkmaar on a three year deal. At AZ, he was part of a Eredivisie Championship and Super Cup winning squad. At the end of his AZ deal he moved to NEC for two seasons, before spending the same amount of time at Groningen, playing regularly for both sides.
His final term in the Eredivisie was with Willem II where he spent a year before becoming a free agent at the end of the 2015-16. In July 2016, Nick turned down a move to Premiership side Kilmarnock to join United on a one year deal.
